Children's Specialized Hospital Foundation unwrapped one of the largest gifts in its 114-year history when the New Jersey District of Kiwanis International approved a $500,000 grant to the Foundation's capital campaign, "The Building Begins with Children," at its Convention on August 27, 2005, in Wildwood, New Jersey. According to New Jersey Kiwanis Foundation President John Wilson, "the grant will be disbursed over a 10-year period, with $250,000 helping to fund the cost of construction of the new hospital building and $250,000 dedicated to establish an endowment fund to defray the cost of treatment for children who are uninsured or underinsured." Opening in 2007, PSE&G Children's Specialized Hospital - New Brunswick will be a $65 million, 128,000 square foot, state-of-the-art inpatient pediatric rehabilitation hospital on the campus of the renowned Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Linked to both Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital and the Child Health Institute, the center will create a comprehensive service delivery system that has never before existed in New Jersey. Their physical connection will offer unparalleled benefits to children as they move seamlessly from acute to rehabilitative care. There will be access to emergency acute care services and research, in-house blood and fluid tests for quicker turn-around times and lower costs, and collaboration opportunities for physicians. Parents will also be able to take a more active role in their child's recovery and in the therapies their child requires thanks to facilities for parents to stay, family lounges, laundry and shower facilities, playrooms for siblings, and more. "This center will give every child in New Jersey access to an unprecedented level of care, as well as the comfort and benefit of having their parents with them," said Children's Specialized Hospital President & CEO Amy Mansue. The new hospital will house three primary centers of excellence, including special infant care for premature babies and programs for children affected by traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. Children's Specialized treated 15,000 patients in 2004. Each member will be eligible to serve a maximum of two consecutive terms with a one year rotation off the Board before any further re-appointment. Meetings will be held quarterly at locations to be determined by the Committee. A quorum will be required for the Committee to transact business. Letter from CSH March 16, 2005 Mr. Jack Wilson Lieutenant Governors New Jersey District Kiwanis Dear Lieutenant Governors, On behalf of everyone at Children's Specialized Hospital, I would like to thank you for your sincere and warm welcome I received in having a chance to speak at your mid-winter conference. I cannot think of a more worthwhile or important organization to have as our partner on our current project than the New Jersey Kiwanis District. You heard me say on Saturday morning that creating the new PSE&G Children’s Specialized Hospital, in New Brunswick will revolutionize the way rehabilitative healthcare is delivered for children in our state. I am sure you will find it hard to believe, as I do, that this will represent the first time that acute care, rehabilitation and research services for children will be well located for on a single campus. Think about it. The effort put forth today will affect children’s lives for generations to come. We are so very grateful for the commitment of your support to our New Brunswick project as well as helping us meet the needs of children who are uninsured and underinsured to receive services from Children's Specialized Hospital. Since most of our inpatients come to us from acute care hospitals, it is not uncommon to find that families have exhausted their medical benefits before entering our doors. The Kiwanis very generous commitment allows us to help them rebuild their lives in a way that these children can complete their rehabilitation and go on to attain their maximum potential. I am enclosing a copy of our "2003 Annual Report" together with a copy of a brief CD ROM that you may find of interest and want to share with your fellow Kiwanians. I hope you find the information helpful, and I look forward to seeing you in August in Wildwood. If you would like any additional information please feel free to contact Philip Salerno, Executive Director of our hospital foundation at (908) 301-5410. Yours sincerely Amy B. Mansue President
